the effect of B and W element on welding chromium carbide wear plate

In the Fe-C-B wear resistant welding material, the wear resistance of the surfacing metal increases slowly with the increase of B (boron) content when the B content is less than 2.37%. Which is due to the formation of Fe3 (C.B) and Fe23 (C.B) 6 hardness is no more than HV1000, so the wear resistance is increased slowly. When the content of B is more than 2.37%, Fe2B with high hardness will be found in alloy, and can effectively resist the high hardness abrasive wear. But when the content of B is greater than 4%, it wear resistance ability is decreased due to the increase of brittleness and welding defects.

As W content gets higher, the relative wear resistance of the welding metal rises. This is because W has the effect of solution strengthening, on the other hand, it also produce the hard phase of WC and W2C, which can improve the wear resistance of the surfacing metal. But higher W content influence over the abrasion resistance is small, as the content of carbon in the surfacing layer is limited, so that W can not completely produce hard phase WC and W2C with Carbon, it may also result in poor cracking resistance and reduce the wear resistance. It is generally considered that the 15-20% W content is reasonable.
