Perheating means to heat the work-piece to room temperature before or during welding, it was divided into several preheating temperature grades according to the application standards of materials. Under certain conditions, other ways of preheating can also be used. Whether preheating is required or not, it has the following advantages:

1. Reduce the shrinkage stress of weld bead and base metal
2. Slow down the cooling rate in the critical temperature range, avoid over-hardening, reduce ductility of the weld bead and heat affecting zone ( HAZ )

The preheating temperature range is usually corresponds to the various weld groove sizes and constraints. Although the minimum preheating temperature is specified in many specifications, in some cases lower or higher preheating temperatures are used.
